Lecture Comments - Contextual Studies

Last Friday I attended a lecture by Chris Goodswen, a 3D character artist. Who Graduated in NUCA games course a few years back.
I will start of by saying that his presentation was one of the most Demoralizing and Inspiring Speeches I have ever listened to (very contradicting i know). At first it started of as I would expect, Chris was talking about his progress throughout the course, Which was nice as i got the idea on what to expect from the upcoming months.
Through out his talk I tried to link his experiences to mine, and plan out my next years according to what he said. It was all very interesting and informative. Until Chris got to the part where he said something along the lines of: "In The gaming industry, there is not much emphasis on individual style, you just draw what you are told to draw". This comment made me studder for a while, because its something I don’t entirely want, I value my individual style more than anything else, and getting it taken from me, plus drawing like in a factory, it did not sound appealing to me at all. But than I thought, this is his experience, so mine could be very different from his, plus Chris specialized in 3D art, which is something totally different from something I would like to do. As Chris’s speech continued I realized the career in game design is not a walk in the park as many may think. Its not all fun and games. Its hard work, on games. Games are hard to make. And the industry is very competitive. But even after all of the very demoralizing/Scary talk, I still want to have a career in game art. I will not take the path Chris has taken, I will make my own and make it as enjoyable and fun as I can, because games are meant to be fun.
That said, I am very glad I had a chance to listen to this presentation, because as scary it might have been, it inspired me, and made me want to draw, and become better in what I do.
